University reminds students of its severe weather protocol

As thunderstorms continue throughout the day, Ball State reminds students and staff that it doesn't issue emergency notifications for severe weather.

"Weather notifications have a very short timeframe, and severe storms are often difficult to predict precisely," said university officials in an email.

Instead the university relies on methods they consider more effective — the three campus sirens, individuals' use of Internet and mobile notifications, and announcements on local TV and radio stations.

An email to students and staff from the Ball State's public safety team mentions that the National Weather Service predicts potential severe thunderstorms, high winds, and/or tornadoes.

As of 2:20 p.m., there were no tornado warnings mentioned for the Muncie area. However, it predicts showers and a possible thunderstorm this afternoon.
