A national labor leader has told about 500 union supporters at an Indiana Statehouse rally that they were right to protest against government policies that would weaken unions.
United Mine Workers President Cecil Roberts told the crowd Monday that all workers have the right to jobs that pay decent wages.
The Statehouse rally was among several planned around Indiana by the AFL-CIO as part of continuing protests against Republican-backed proposals that Democratic lawmakers called anti-worker and say prompted their five-week legislative boycott.
Monday's rallies were timed to mark the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The other rallies were set in Fort Wayne, Jeffersonville, Kokomo and South Bend.
Thousands of union members attended Statehouse protests during the boycott by most House Democrats that ended March 28.
