More than 7,000 expected to attend Late Nite Carnival

Rides, games and food booths are set up and ready for Friday's Late Nite Carnival. The event will include 15 carnival rides, more than 10 game booths, two stages and free snacks.

The carnival starts at 6 p.m. for pre-registered students, 7 p.m. for everybody else, and ends at 2 a.m. Rides include a Ferris Wheel, a merry-go-round, Power Surge and the dunk tank.

Vendors will sell carnival food, which would only cost up to $4.

Shelby Abrams, member relations chairwoman with Late Nite, said she's expecting 7,000 to 10,000 people to attend.

"This time tomorrow when 5 o'clock hits, it's going to be all crazy when we see the line of students come up to come in," she said on Thursday. "It's 10 times bigger than Late Nite."

Jenelle Bickel, marketing chairwoman, said this year's main stage will include a circus act. There will be sword swallowing, glass walking and fire breathers as part of the act.

"I wanted to do something crazy or out of the realm, fun," she said. "And the first thing that popped into my head was, ‘Well, it's a carnival, so there's gonna be carnival acts.'"

Bickel said Late Nite receives about $84,000 to host the carnival, or about $12 per person with an estimated 7,000 people attending.

While long lines are the usual concern, Bickel said the pre-registration for students will help shorten lines. In addition, gates will close at 1 a.m., giving time for lines to clear until 2 a.m.

Late Nite is also concerned with the weekend weather.

According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are expected Friday, with a 100 percent chance of precipitation. Late Nite's rain date, Saturday, could also be ruined because of the weather.

However, Bickel said Late Nite will most likely not shut down.

"It has to be lightening, it has to be thundering and it has to be at least 40 mph winds. It rained last year and we worked, and we had a blast."
