Art Mart helps students with projects

Ball State students interested in art have a place off campus to go when they need materials or advice when working on projects.

Art Mart, located at 409 N Martin St. in the Village, offers a large variety of supplies for different art methods. Customers can find books, sculpting, print making, watercolor materials and many other products.

Art Mart was voted as the best locally owned business. White Rabbit and MT Cup, both businesses located in the Village, were the runners-up.

Karen Fisher, the owner of Art Mart, said the store caters to students from different departments, not only art. She said customers can also come in whenever they need advice on their projects.

"A customer can come in with an idea of what to do, but not how to do it. We can get them all kind of info on how to finish their projects," she said. "We try to personalize our customer care."

Fisher attended Ball State and graduated with a degree in art education. She taught in Anderson and also worked at Gordy's Art Mart, which later became Art Mart. Fisher and her husband, Paul, purchased the business from Brian and Jenny Gordy in 2003.

Art Mart sometimes invites artists to talk with students or community members who are their regular customers.

"Whenever we can or have an opportunity to do that, whenever we find a place, we do it," Fisher said. "Teaching our community is one of the things we enjoy doing. We bring artists or interesting people to give talks, we have panel discussions."

Elizabeth Fisher, an employee at Art Mart and Karen Fisher's daughter, said when it comes to their customers, the store works to give them the best service.

"We really try to cater to out customers as much as we can," Elizabeth Fisher said. "We work really close to them. If they have any technical questions, we can talk with them, and if we can't help them, we usually know people that can help them."
