Food, music and performances from different countries in the African continent are some of the features that will be presented today at the Christian Campus house, on Riverside Avenue.
The African Student Association is hosting its second annual "Taste of Africa," where attendees are encouraged to try different dishes from across the African continent, as well as to join in their music and dance.
"If you love connecting with people and immersing yourself in a different culture, then you do not have any reason for missing out on this one," Catherine Aurah, president of ASA, said. "It is a social event and one that exposes one to the outside world."
The success of the event even before it takes place is evident from the sold out tickets.
"We have had to turn people away from attending because we exhausted our tickets," Aurah said. "We printed just enough for the group that can fit the venue."
The turnout for this year's event is larger than the previous year.
"This year we have a better venue and more people are interested this year," Prince Afriyie, organizer of the event, said. "There is going to be more variety of food and it's more organized."
Some of the foods that will be served include: rice, chicken, soups, mandazi (fried bread) and kachumbari (similar to cole slaw with shredded vegetables).
Aside from the African food, performances will also be a part of the event.
An African-American group will be coming to sing and dance as well as other performances from different countries in Africa, Afriyie said.
"People are going to walk down the aisle in their African clothes," he said. "People will see the African dress of different countries."
Aurah said the dinner is meant to be a learning and sharing experience for all.
"This is one event that brings us together as Africans from the Diaspora to just share about our experiences, taste our own African dishes and share it with friends," she said. "In Africa, we believe in group as opposed to individual."
Aurah said she hopes participants will leave the event with better knowledge of the different African cultures.
"We wish our guests to have a feel of Africa and to know that Africa is a continent with many countries," she said.
