SGA president pro tempore elected, cabinet announced

Catalyst completed filling the Student Government Association executive branch so it can move forward with its term.

The cabinet was appointed and elections were held for the president pro tempore at Wednesday's meeting.

A cabinet of nine students was appointed to carry out everything that comes through the executive branch to aid the executive board.

Kayla Pickersgill, SGA president, said the executive board didn't have any trouble appointing its cabinet.

"There are no second choices on our [executive branch]," she said. "Every single person we thought was the best for the job agreed to work with us."

Pickersgill announced during the meeting that each cabinet members would be present at meetings to act as an expert when senators organize programs within their fields of expertise.

Senator Chad Griewank was elected as president pro tempore to serve as the liaison between senators and the executive board. While Griewank has most of his experience with SGA, he also has experience with University Senate and Campus Council.

Pickersgill served as president pro tempore during the last term. She said she thinks Griewank will fill the role well.

"In the bylaws, it says the role of [president pro tempore] is to serve as an aid to senators. Really, a lot of it is up to interpretation," she said. "He is very organized, and he is an intent listener."

Pickersgill said listening is an important quality for the president pro tempore to have.

Senator Jacob Kluth was Griewank's opponent in the election. Senators voted after each candidate spoke for five minutes about his goals and answered questions for another five minutes.

Twenty-six senators voted in favor of Griewank, while 13 chose Kluth.

Griewank spoke about several goals he would like to implement into his role of president pro tempore, including different ways of working on a more personal level with senators, caucuses and committees as well as senators evaluating how the senate performed as a whole at the end of the term.

The largest goal Griewank has is to have a large strictly caucus and committee meeting before the next executive board elections start.

His goal would include 25 to 30 minutes for caucus meetings, and about the same amount of time for committee meetings where each group could generate all of the ideas and actions they had over the past term. From there, they could make sure they tried each attempt to its fullest and reflect on their accomplishments. A large success report would be made public for anyone to see.

Griewank said students will be able to see how senators addressed their concerns, if they were addressed at all.

"It holds the senators and the caucuses and the committees and the senate as a whole accountable for what our constituents asked us to do," he said. "[The final success report] is something you can see a physical copy of it. You know what we're doing."
