Potholes become daunting challenge for Muncie drivers

Uncovered from the winter's blanket of snow and ice are the infamous Muncie potholes, which have led to vehicle damage for some.

Mathematical science education major Derek Heis said two of his tires blew out after driving over a pothole in Muncie last month.

"The cost would have been $200, but [the mechanic] offered to sell the road hazard warranty as I was buying my replacement tires," he said. "So the cost of the warranty and two tires was about $110."

Ron Ball, supervisor of the Muncie Street Department, said even though permanent fixes for the holes won't start until later in April, help is on the way.

Ball said the city is filling the holes with a less permanent fix until a mix used to fill holes is made in April. Once the mix is made, the city will be divided into 12 sections, and they will each be worked on until all potholes are filled.

Other people in Muncie have experienced damages including bent rims and broken tire rods. City officials have been hearing complaints about how the city has handled the pothole problem.

Although many commuters want to see the potholes fixed, not all agree the damages to vehicles should be paid for by the city.

Meteorology major Lindsey Moistner said people should report the potholes.

"Although they are hard to see, it is the driver's responsibility to avoid hitting potholes or report them to the city to prevent other drivers from hitting them," she said.

Ball said people who are frustrated with the city's potholes should call the Muncie Potholes Hotline. More than 150 people have called the hotline this year, he said.

For compensation for vehicle damages, drivers can contact the city clerk's office. Ball said the city must have prior knowledge of the pothole to receive compensation. Conversations on social media between Muncie residents also indicate that an estimate of the damages may be needed with a claim.

In addition to the hotline, residents who spot potholes can let the city know by going to cityofmuncie.com and clicking "Street/Public Works."
