BEAT challenges students to save energy again

Once again, it's time for students living in the dorms on campus to take the energy saving challenge posed by the Ball State Energy Action Team.

This year, BEAT is changing a few things in its energy challenge. It is not only focusing on common areas in each dorm, but also encouraging students to save more energy in their rooms.

The theme this year is "Green Your Room," and each student is encouraged to make small changes to his or her lifestyle to make big changes in the university's energy budget.

"With this new focus, we are targeting the individual rooms," BEAT member Megan Gish said.

Gish said the group asked students to post energy saving tips on its Facebook page to win prizes. Some of the tips even surprised the organization.

On the group page, Ball State student Nathaniel O'Dell posted, "When your old light bulbs die, replace them with compact fluorescent bulbs, or LED light bulbs. They save energy and last much longer, meaning less work for you!"

Kati Ingerson posted a tip asking students to turn down the heat during the winter when they are not in the house because it saves energy and money.

With successful new events to get students involved outside of the residence halls, BEAT made some changes to how it will rate each dorm, Gish said.

BEAT member Becca Staley after talking to residence hall assistants and students who participated in the last competition, the group realized it needed to make some changes.

"We were talking to students and RAs, asking what they were doing to participate in the challenge," she said, "and we realized we would be able to reach extra potential if people make changes in their room. It was just the next step forward."

While the competition started Monday, students have until April 18 to save energy. The winner will be announced at BEAT's Earth Day celebration.
