WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals continue match play on road

Freshman Sanders potential key to victory

The Ball State women's tennis team will compete in two matches on the road this weekend, traveling to Valparaiso on Saturday and the University of Chicago on Sunday.

The Cardinals are sitting on a record of 1-3 after earning their first win of the season at IUPUI last weekend and are hoping to build on the success they had in that matchup.

"With wins in tennis comes confidence and we had another great week in practice," coach Christine Bader said. "So I'm hoping the girls come out on the court with confidence and fight and get a little bit feisty. Hopefully we will come away with two wins this weekend."

Kristel Sanders, a freshman from the Netherlands, has had a fantastic start to the season despite having only one win. Sanders has taken her opponents to the final set in most of her matches. Her success gives Bader hope, as Sanders' youth gives her time to develop and improve.

"She has done a great job as a freshman," Bader said. "On the singles court she had a really great match against the IU girls at No. 5 singles. She is definitely a big part of this team and its actually her birthday (on Wednesday). I think with time she is only going to get better."

Sanders could end up with a great birthday present by helping her team earn two victories this weekend with her play at No. 5 singles.
