WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Costly turnovers lead to Ball State loss

Cardinals hope to regain focus with day off before going back to practice

The team that commits the fewest turnovers in a game is usually the winner. Ball State fell victim to the rule after committing 28 turnovers in a 68-59 loss to Ohio on Wednesday.

Nineteen of the Cardinals turnovers came in the first half. Even with the number of committed turnovers, Ball State never trailed by more than nine points in the game.

Coach Kelly Packard was more than upset about the loss.

"This is a day I won't say a whole lot," Packard said. "I'm embarrassed."

In the first half, both teams traded baskets as Ball State surged ahead to take a 10-6 lead.

After the first time out, senior guard Ebony Jackson scored to put her team up 12-6, the largest lead the Cardinals had all night.

The Bobcats controlled the rest of the first half before the Cardinals used a 3-point play by senior guard Ty'Ronda Benning to take a 33-31 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Ball State held the lead until the 13 minute mark when a 3-pointer by Ohio's Erin Bailes put her team ahead.

The Bobcats never surrendered the lead the rest of the game and used full court pressure to bother the Cardinals.

"We weren't moving a lot in our zone offense," senior guard Emily Maggert said. "It was just a mess when we just needed to play. It was frustrating."

Maggert said she didn't know what the reason for her team's disappointing play was.

Packard said she felt the team needed time to think things over, which included taking time away from basketball.

Ball State will take a day off following the loss before returning to practice Friday to prepare for Saturday's game at Bowling Green.

"We need to get back to how we want to play," Maggert said. "Friday, we're going to get at it and leave it all on the floor. We're going get ready for [Bowling Green]."

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 43 percent from the field. The Bobcats finished shooting 44 percent.

Ball State also shot a season-low 18 percent from 3-point range on the night.

Maggert led the team with 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Ohio's Shavon Robinson led the Bobcats with 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 9-13 on the season and 4-5 in the Mid-American Conference.
