TRACK AND FIELD: MAC championships set to begin

Ball State plans on taking about 15 athletes to event

The Ball State track and field team will compete in the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at Bowling Green.

The action starts at 10 a.m. Friday with the women's pentathlon.

"I'm not going to take a whole lot of people," coach Randy Heisler said. "We are looking at taking 14 to 15 people, and you are allowed to take 30."

Ball State has eight athletes that are ranked in their respective events by the conference.

Rebecca Lomax is ranked first in the high jump as a freshman. She also owns a 10th-place ranking in the pentathlon.

Senior Ra'Jae Marable is looking for a repeat of the 60-meter hurdles MAC title she won as a freshman. She is ranked third.

Senior Thekla Lorenz is ranked 13th in the pentathlon. Lorenz is also a long jumper listed eighth in the conference.

Senior Ali Bishel is ranked ninth in the 3,000-meter run.

Sophomore Judah Smith is ranked 10th in the 500-meter run and 17th in the 400-meter dash.

Senior Megan Cherry is ranked 13th in the triple jump.

In the weight throw, sophomore Lywanna Melvin is ranked 17th for the Cardinals.

Junior Janae Taylor holds a 19th-place ranking in the 60-meter dash and 20th position in the 200-meter dash.

Heiser said taking 14 to 15 people was part of his strategy.

"[We are taking the] people who have a chance of doing well, at least making the final, if not scoring," he said.
