Students get ready to take the polar plunge

Students can take a dip in freezing water at the second-annual Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday at the Student Center.

Hosted by Phi Sigma Kappa and the University Police Department, each participant will dive into a four-foot deep outdoor pool filled with icy cold water.

Last year, the event raised more than $8,000. All proceeds for this year's plunge will go to the Special Olympics.

Whitney Hamblin, Student Government Association vice president, participated in the event last year and said participants should make sure to bring a towel.

"Go as fast as you can and wear minimal clothing, a swimsuit preferably," she said. "Last year I wish I had shoes, because when you get out of the pool, your wet feet stick to the frozen ground."

No injuries or hypothermia outbreaks have occurred in the past, Alex Green, co-coordinator of the event, said.

On average, a person will be in the water for 15 seconds. After taking the plunge, he or she can run into the Student Center to get dry and warm, Green said.

Registration for the plunge begins at 1 p.m., and the event will start at 2 p.m. It costs $60 dollars per five-person team.

Participants don't have to be part of greek life to participate in the event.
