SOFTBALL: Ball State looks to correct mistakes in Phyllis Rafter Memorial

Cardinals confident in Bickel as offensive force

Coming off a 2-2 record in the Austin Peay Tournament, the Ball State softball team looks to bounce back this weekend in the Phyllis Rafter Memorial in Woodstock, Ga.

Losses to Cleveland State and UMKC have Ball State hoping to learn from its mistakes and make an impact in the upcoming tournament.

Senior shortstop Alicia Barkley said some of the struggles the Cardinals had this past weekend were correctable, and that the team will be fine moving forward.

"As a team, I know we could have played better," she said. "We struggled offensively during both games we lost. We had trouble executing the little things we do every day on the offensive side and couldn't string hits together. But I see the potential we have as a team and know the damage we can do."

Freshman third baseman Audrey Bickel is one player that can cause severe damage to the opposition, hitting .429 and driving in six runs in the Austin Peay tournament last weekend.

"Audrey is someone we brought in to lead the offensive force," coach Craig Nicholson said. "I think if she stays grounded and continues to work and continues to have good pitches to hit, then she's going to continue to have success."

Barkley said she expects big things to happen in the Phyllis Rafter Memorial this weekend.

"I see our team winning every game of course," Barkley said. "I think we all are on the same track and have the same long-term goal in mind. We want to win games, and of course win the [Mid-American Conference.]"
