REVIEW REDEUX: Valentine's Day Special

72HRS ONLINE

It's Valentine's Day and you wish to spend a romantic evening with your significant other, but every restaurant in town is booked. Or you are single and looking for something to do.

Why not cook a nice meal and pop in a DVD? Unfortunately, the most popular films for Valentine's Day are overly-clichéd romantic comedies or sappy romances.

Don't get me wrong, I love a tearjerker as much as the next person, but why not spare your significant other the pain and watch something, well, a little less chick-flickish?

I have accumulated some of the worst Valentine's films and a few that should be taken into consideration instead.

Worst Valentine's Films

1. Any of Nicholas Sparks' films: "The Notebook," "Message in a Bottle and" "A Walk to Remember." Sparks' films are possibly the sappiest films out there. If you enjoy that, that's fine, but don't torture your significant other.

2. "Jerry Maguire." "You had me at hello." Really? Tom Cruise trying to be romantic. Do I really need to say anything else?

3. Any Nancy Meyers' film: "Something's Gotta Give," "The Holiday and" "What Women Want." These films are okay with the girls, but I made the mistake of watching "The Holiday" with two men and they still haven't forgiven me for the traumatizing experience.

4. "Tristan and Isolde." This film achieved its goal: it made me want to cry. Not because of the melodramatic story, but because of the pathetic acting and ridiculous dialogue. Sure James Franco is pretty to look at, but that is the only thing going for the film. Maybe if you put it on mute it would be better.

5. "Titanic." How could I put this on the list? Yes, it is a classic romance and Leo is beautiful in it, but maybe it is a little overdone for Valentine's Day. Why not save this one for a rainy day?

Best Valentine's Day Films

1. "Wall-E." Yes, the animated film about robots. Who knew it would take two robots to create one of the sweetest romances around?

2. "Slumdog Millionaire." It is an exciting story about a poor underdog whose greatest inspiration is the love of a woman. Don't let the trailers fool you. This is not a light film. It deals with issues such as death, poverty and abuse, but the ending will have you inspired.

3. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." Have you ever wanted to erase an ex from your mind? Well, that is exactly what this film is about. It is an eccentric love story about losing and gaining love with an amazing cast led by Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey.

4. "As Good as it Gets." Jack Nicholson is not someone you would particularly imagine in a romantic comedy, but he is wonderful in this one. He and Helen Hunt both shine as two unlikely lovers.

5. "Lars and the Real Girl." Ryan Gosling plays a man in love with a blow up doll. With one of the most original screenplays around, this film is both funny and surprisingly sweet.
