MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State wins one game, weather cancels follow-up

Cardinals take every singles match without dropping a set

Ball State was supposed to play two matches Saturday, but Indiana weather had other plans.

The Cardinals defeated Detroit Mercy 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA before the match against Anderson that night was canceled.

"We'll try to make it up later in the year," coach Bill Richards said. "It has not been rescheduled yet."

The Anderson men's tennis team was unable to leave its school due to inclement weather. Richards said a rescheduled match against Anderson would have to be played on a day Ball State has another home match scheduled.

With the win against Detroit, the Cardinals moved to 5-1 on the season.

Detroit was able to win at No. 3 doubles, but that was its only success on the day. Juniors Cliff Morrison and Zane Smith won at No. 1 doubles 8-0, while sophomore Dalton Albertin and Freshmen Austin Smith won at No. 2 Doubles 8-6.

"I know the level of play that I expect and we didn't play that way," Richards said. "We were spotty. When we get to some of our tougher teams in our schedule, that's not going to get the job done."

The Cardinals carried the six singles matches against the Titans without dropping a set.

Morrison won at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-3. Albertin needed a tie-breaker is his first set but won at No. 2 7-6, 6-2. Zane Smith also need a tie-breaker in his 7-5, 7-6 win at No. 3.

"I didn't feel like we were sharp," Richards said. "Yet we were able to win fairly handedly."

Sophomore Alexandre Brym and senior Shaun Bussert rebounded with singles wins after losing last week against Xavier. Austin Smith won at No. 5 in straight sets.

Ball State had a short week of practice because of the weather. One practice day was lost and other days were shortened.

"We think we've been practicing well until this week," Richards said. "A little hiccup this week."

Ball State will continue its 10-game homestand next weekend with two matches on Friday against Valparaiso and IUPUI.
