The Ball State men's swimming and diving team will wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a meet against Miami in Oxford, OH.
Cardinal coach Bob Thomas said that with the Mid-American Conference Championships looming, he's been keeping a typical practice schedule rather than giving his team extra rest to gear up for fast times.
"We're just treating it like another meet because it is so close to conference," Thomas said. "Obviously we'd like to see fast times going in to conference and I think some guys will swim really well. Others might just stay around where they've been."
Several swimmers either posted season-best times or were nearing them in the Cardinals' last meet on January 23rd at the Butler Invitational, where they garnered wins in seven of 16 events.
Sophomore Michael Weber turned in his best time of the season in the 100-yard backstroke with a 52.73 effort, junior Chris Krupa was just five-hundredths of a second off his best time with a 50.79 in the 100 butterfly, and junior Casey Schroeder was only eight-hundredths of a second away from his top 50 freestyle effort with a 21.66.
As times continue to improve and MAC Championships approach, team chemistry and collective work ethic become even more vital to a team's success.
"Our chemistry has been very good and the guys kind of fed off each other," Thomas said. "I think it's because of their collective mentality and the right mix of personalities. Sometimes the best group of upperclassmen can't find the balance that we have."
After Saturday's meet, the Cardinals will begin the process of tapering and gearing up for the season's singular goal of the MAC Championships. Thomas said that they'll be backing off the volume and intensity of practice workouts and focus on getting proper rest.
The meet against the RedHawks, a strong MAC opponent, is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
