INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A Republican state lawmaker is dropping her effort to quadruple fees on marriage licenses and certificates unless couples complete marriage preparation classes.
Bill sponsor Rep. Cindy Noe of Indianapolis said she couldn't get the proposal the way she wanted it before an upcoming legislative deadline, so the bill is likely dead for this year. Noe argued that marriage preparation classes would strengthen Indiana families and help prevent family fragmentation.
Opponents said it was ironic that Republicans, who often want little interference from the government, would propose such a bill. Critics said the bill represented government intrusion.
Under Noe's bill, couples who completed premarital classes would have paid the standard $18 fee for a marriage license and certificate. But couples that didn't take a course would have paid $72.
