Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller was on Ball State University campus today talking about a new bill pushing its way through Indiana government that would allow cell phone numbers to be put on the state's ‘Do Not Call List.'
Zoeller said he hopes the bill will address companies marketing products though texts messaging as well as calls.
"We can start to see some of the telemarketers that are now using text messaging, video and pictures as part of their sales pitch," Zoeller said. "So we're going to include those prohibitions to our telephone privacy statute. It is a very important thing, particularly for younger users of technology, you've got to stay out ahead of the telemarketers."
According to press release from the attorney general's office, the bill was passed by the Indiana House of Representatives by a 95-0 vote on Jan. 31 and sent to the senate.
Ball State first year doctoral student Tim Moyers said that he has been getting both calls and text messages from telemarketers on his cell phone.
"It's aggravating enough when I get telemarketers calling at home and I don't need it all the time. I'm already getting that and its quite aggravating," Moyer said. "The telemarketers that call me act like they've already talk to me like I've already signed something with them, and it's just a big scam."
Zoeller said the next step is for the House of Representatives and the senate to agree on certain parts of the bill that are different in the house and senate versions.
