Hundreds of Ind. teachers protest education bills

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — Hundreds of northern Indiana teachers turned out to protest contentious education changes Republican state lawmakers are pushing.

About 400 teachers and supporters gathered Wednesday outside the Porter County Courthouse in Valparaiso, waving signs and chanting "Save our schools."

Retired Portage High School government teacher Ronald Hancock told The Times of Munster that a bill that would restrict teachers' collective bargaining rights except in money matters was the ultimate insult. He says his "blood is boiling" over that and other GOP proposals that include school vouchers and expanding charter schools.

Most of Indiana's 40 House Democrats fled the state to a hotel in eastern Illinois on Tuesday, effectively stalling action on legislation they say is part of a "radical" Republican agenda targeting education and workers.
