The beam got the Cardinals again.
The Ball State gymnastics team lost to its second-straight opponent from the state of Illinois, as Illinois-Chicago pulled out a 193.175-191.925.
After three rotations, the Cardinals led 145.55-144.8, but only one of the six gymnasts -- sophomore Emily Wehrle -- hit her balance beam routine, which resulted in the loss.
Up to that point, the meet had been going well for Ball State. It set season highs on the vault and the uneven bars and won the floor exercise for its sole event win.
Even an average performance for the Cardinals on the beam would have resulted in a season-high total score. But it was not to be.
Individually, sophomore Nicole Allen picked up a first-place result in the vault with a career-high 9.875. Allen has set a new career mark in every meet this season and has picked up at least one first place in five of six meets.
Junior Brittney Emmons tied for first on the bars with a 9.75. Emmons also picked up her first all-around win of the season with a 38.5.
In all, the Cardinals set six career highs and three season highs during Friday's meet. Freshmen Aftyn Siemer and Kristin Vignola had four of those career bests, each earning them on the vault and the floor.
Sophomore Chantel Turk led the Flames with first-place results in the vault and the bars.
Ball State will return to action Friday in a four-way meet at Illinois State. Seattle Pacific and Wisconsin-LaCrosse will also be competing.
