Dance Marathon raises more money than expected for hospital

About $39,220 was raised at the fundraiser for Riley Hospital for Children

The Recreation and Wellness Center was host to Ball State Dance Marathon fundraiser which lasted from 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. for Riley Children's Hospital.

Executive board member Kelli Martin has served on the executive board for Dance Marathon for the last four years and has not seen a fundraiser as effective as this year's.

"[Saturday's] marathon was everything we hoped it would turn into," Martin said. "I can definitely tell how far everything has come over the last four years. It's just awe-inspiring."

Adrienne Hall, operations chair for Dance Marathon, said the event raised more money than expected.

"We raised $39,220 this year, which is more than two times what we raised last year," she said.

There were also various games, corn hole boards, a bounce house, computers and Wii video games for participants to use to pass the time.

The Dance Marathon morale committee also taught parts of a dance throughout the night.

Families from Riley shared their experiences throughout the night.

At around 12:40 a.m., 17-year-old Evan Meade spoke about his arduous bout with leukemia.

"He was very inspiring and someone I quickly looked up to. He made me realize all over again why I participate in Dance Marathon, for kids and teenagers like him," Martin said.
