Ball State to host Latino issues conference

People of all races and ethnic backgrounds will have the opportunity to join to discuss common problems in the Latino community.

The Indiana Latino Leadership Conference and workshops will be held throughout the L.A. Pittenger Student Center on Feb. 26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. People interested have to register online by 3 p.m. Friday.

Graciela Roman, member of the Latino Student Union funding committee, said the conference is open to people of all backgrounds.

"I think it is important because it really covers a broad spectrum of issues in the community," she said. "Even people who aren't Latino should come [because it] gets them in touch with their Latino community. It is a good insight into Latino culture."

This will be the 11th year the Latino Leadership conference is held. Indiana University holds the conference, but each year, it chooses another university to host the conference. Ball State will be the host for the first time.

The theme for the conference changes every year. This year the theme is "Identity: The search for collective consciousness."

Alejandra Lagunas, chairwoman of the ILLC planning committee, said the conference-goers will talk about the issues that affect Latinos every day. Some of these issues in the Latino community include health, education, poverty and immigration.

Lagunas said the conference can also be used as an opportunity for networking and finding other people with the same issues in the college community.

Sixteen different workshops will be available to participants. Workshop descriptions can be found at illc.info.

Registration for the conference includes a $12 fee for breakfast and lunch.

Lagunas said the conference is meant to bring Latino cultures together as a whole.

"It is about embracing our identity and how each individual is not just Mexican or Latino or Hispanic," she said. "We just represent who we are."
