Ball State students take on icy water for charity

Twelve teams and several community members took the plunge Saturday outside of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.

Each participant took a turn to leap off a platform and in the frigid waters of an above-ground pool.

This was the second year Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and the University Police Department have hosted Polar Plunge, an event aimed at raising money for the Special Olympics.

"Polar Plunge is a lot of fun," Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said. "It is a great organization and a great opportunity to raise money for Special Olympic athletes and bring members of the community and the university together."

At most, the participants were in the water for 15 seconds. Once they reached the ladder and got out, they were went in the Student Center, dried off and changed into warm clothes.

Fraternities and sororities formed groups of six and competed in a relay race. Delta Tau Delta took home the gold for the guys, while Delta Zeta snatched it up for the girls.

"It was so cold, but totally worth it," said Courtney Boyce, a member of the Phi Mu sorority.

Attendance was up this year, event co-coordinator Alex Green said. He said it was a good sign that the event will raise more than the $8,000 brought in last year, and he hopes the event will continue and grow in years to come.

Once again, all of this year's participants escaped injury and hypothermia.
