Alpha Phi contestant wins Mr. Phi-nomenal event

The crowd in Pruis Hall Wednesday night leaped from its chairs to present this year's Mr. Phi-nomenal, Joe Young, with a standing ovation as his was announced the winner of the 12th annual event.

After the announcement of this year's Mr. Phi-nominal, Young said he was having a hard time standing still in all of the excitement.

"I'm pumped," he said. "I am overwhelmed with joy. A lot of love goes out to Alpha Phi for this wonderful opportunity."

Young captivated his audience with an excerpt from his string quintet titled "A Man's Will to a Woman".

The excerpt "Jinjer" showed the audience a little piece of his composition and they were hooked. Young said he plans to pursue a career in music education.

Other winners for the night included runner-up Zach Braddock, the crowd favorite Jack Barfell, and Mr. Congeniality Morgan Stehr.

Performances ranged from singing and guitar playing to puppet dancing and beat boxing.

The purpose of the event is to help Alpha Phi's philanthropy, the Alpha Phi foundation, which raises money to help with cardiac care for women.

The American Heart Association reports 120,000 women die from cardiac arrest each year, 39 percent more deaths than from breast cancer.
