2010 census: Central Indiana grows the most, Gary shrinks

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The state demographer at Indiana University says the state's 2010 census data shows the Indianapolis metropolitan area accounted for more than half of the state's growth since 2000 while the city of Gary and a large swath of north central and east central Indiana are in decline.

Matt Kinghorn of the Indiana Business Research Center says the 10-county Indianapolis metropolitan area grew by about 230,000 residents compared with just over 400,000 for the state as a whole.

He says Gary's population fell by 22 percent over the period and stood at just over 80,000 residents last April. Also in decline are the north central and east central counties surrounding Connersville, Richmond, Anderson, Muncie, Marion, Kokomo, Logansport and Wabash.

Kinghorn says Indiana's Hispanic and Asian populations are growing more than expected.
