Purdue scientist to discuss future of farming

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A Purdue University scientist will discuss the high-tech future of crop farming at a conference in Indianapolis later this month.

Agricultural economist Mike Boehlje says farmers a decade from now will rely on computers and other technologies to grow thousands of acres of crops in ways that meet consumer demand for more organic, locally grown and earth-friendly food.

He says 6 percent of U.S. farmers already operate about 40 percent of the farmland. By 2020, as little as 5 percent of farmers could be handling about half the farmland.

Boehlje will discuss what he believes the future holds during the Indiana Certified Crop Adviser Conference Dec. 14-15 at the Indianapolis Marriott East.
