Toxicology report confirms methodone in IU student's system

Ball State received the toxicology report for the Indiana University student who died in a dormitory room Sept. 11 after partying with friends.

Delaware County Coroner Jim Clevenger said the toxicology report showed a toxic level of methodone in the student's system.

"By now we all know this young man didn't want to commit suicide or there weren't any homicide intentions," he said.

The report confirmed the findings of University Police Department, and the investigation from UPD is officially closed, Kay Bales, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, said in an e-mail.

Bales said the Office of Student Rights and Community Standards and the Office of Housing and Residence Life have reviewed the case to determine whether university policies were violated during the incident.

Bales said the investigation showed that Polston and one resident of the room were the only ones who spent the night in the room.

"Polston was required to register as an overnight guest, and he did so in accordance with the policy," she said.

Bales said two students may have violated the university's alcohol policy and the university will complete "disciplinary procedure" outlines in the student code. However, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protects other information about students' disciplinary actions from being available.

"On behalf of the University, I again offer our deepest sympathies to Jarrod's family and his friends both in Greenwood and at Indiana University-Bloomington," Bales said.
