WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) — Purdue officials plan to cut ties with a fraternity after finding that members broke alcohol and hazing rules while it was on probation for earlier alcohol violations.
Purdue administrators say a review of Phi Kappa Theta uncovered multiple instances of hazing and thefts from university dining halls. The major offense happened in the fall when 28 pledges were asked to duct tape 40-ounce bottles of alcohol to their hands for a drinking game.
Phi Kappa Theta was put on probation in September 2009.
The fraternity's national organization has filed an appeal to block the expulsion.
National fraternity board president Kevin Lampe told the Journal & Courier that parents and other alumni have worked with the Purdue chapter, and new leaders have been installed.
