REVIEW REDUEX: Inspirational indie film will touch your heart

Young actress steals scenes in 'Whale Rider'

Inspirational films are one of my all-time favorite film genres. I love the feeling of happiness you receive after watching them.

"Whale Rider" is one of those films. It was made as a low-budget, indie film but will leave a big impression upon any viewer.

The film takes place on the eastern shores of New Zealand where the Maori people live. The legend goes that their great ancestor, Paikea, escaped drowning when his boat capsized by riding on the back of a whale until he landed on the island of New Zealand. In the film, the Maori are led by direct descendants of Paikea, specifically the chiefs, who are always first-born males. The village has practiced this tradition for thousands of years until fate intervenes.
