REVIEW REDUEX: Film mixes comedy, drama

Erin's movie pick this week is "Everything is Illuminated"

"Everything Is Illuminated" is a rare film that manages to stir comedy and drama together to create something captivating.

Jonathan (Elijah Wood), a young Jewish-American, is a collector of many things, primarily family history. After the death of his grandfather, Jonathan travels to Ukraine in pursuit of the woman who saved his grandfather's life during World War II. Among the few clues he has are a photograph and the name of a village. He employs the Odessa Heritage Tours, which consists of an anti-Semitic old man, his dog and his translator grandson, to take him on a life-changing journey through the Ukrainian countryside that opens doors to the past.

"Everything Is Illuminated" is the directorial debut of actor Liev Schreiber, who also wrote the screenplay. The story, based on the 2005 novel by Jonathan Safran Foer, is a difficult one to translate to film. In someone else's hands "Everything is Illuminated" would have turned into a chaotic mess, but Schreiber knew exactly what the film needed to resonate with audiences.
