At Wednesday's Homecoming Flag Football Championship, it was a fraternity and sorority game with Pi Beta Phi/Phi Sigma Kappa defeating Kappa Delta/FIJI for the title.
Students went out to Scheumann Stadium for the second-annual flag football tournament. Sixteen teams played in the preliminaries Sunday in hopes of making it to the championship.
Even though flag football doesn't require any tackling, players still had some collisions and clashes.
Each team had four male and four female players. Junior entrepreneurship major Ryan McBride, of Pi Beta Phi/Phi Sigma Kappa, said the coed teams in his team's favor.
"Our girls were clutch," McBride said. "They scored two of our touchdowns, and we couldn't have won without them."
McBride added the classic sporting line, announcing that his team is going to Disney World.
Although attendance didn't put a dent in the large Scheumann Stadium, there was plenty of cheering during the semifinal and championship rounds. Students from all four semifinalist organizations came out to cheer on their favorite team. Those watching were screaming and jumping up and down at the every call.
A play-by-play announcer made the game seem like an actual sport event. Junior Josh Doak served as this year's announcer.
Attendees at the flag football championship had a chance to win prizes. Sport Clips had a drawing for a hair care package worth about $300 that included a bucket of candy, men's hair care products and a bundle of coupons. The Alumni Association had a drawing for a student to win a $250 scholarship.
Charlie Cardinal chose five participants to take a shot at a field goal kick. Each person who made the field goal kick would split a $250 scholarship from the Alumni Association. Because none of the five participants made the field goal. A second drawing was held for the $250 scholarship.
Sport Clips also donated the prizes for first- and second-place teams. Pi Beta Phi/Phi Sigma Kappa took home a grill with aprons and utensils. Kappa Delta/FIJI won a cooler full of tailgating snacks for Saturday's Homecoming football game.
Although attendance was low, spirit did not seem to be a problem, said Chanel Richards, Homecoming general chairwoman.
Kait Buck, Homecoming flag football chairwoman, said last night's attendance was all about quality over quantity.
"We didn't get the attendance we wanted," Buck said. "But everyone who came out seemed to be having a blast the entire night, even during the semifinalist round."
