Participants, committee 'pumped' for Air Jam

There are a few tickets left for Air Jam, but if Tuesday's sell out of the first allotment was any indication, those tickets will probably go fast.

Jenna Day said she never would have thought Air Jam could be sold out two days in advance.

She's participated in the lip sync competition for the past three years. Now a senior, Day serves as the Air Jam chairwoman and said she can't wait to see the packed house at John R. Emens Auditorium tonight.

"I'm pumped!" she said. "I didn't expect it until Wednesday or the day of. To find out by Tuesday morning it had been sold out, it just made me really excited that everybody wanted to come see my show. It's like my baby that I'm excited to be a part of."

The final 100 tickets will be available at the door for $8 starting at 8 p.m. The event begins at 9 p.m.

The ticket were gone fast, and so did the participation slots. Teams had a week to sign up, and 18 of the 21 spots were filled within 15 minutes, Day said. Normally, they take the first 20 teams, but this year they ended up with only one alternate, so the committee let them participate as well.

Veterans of the competition say they're more excited about team building than the possibility of winning Air Jam.

Junior Michael Rivera, competing with the Latino Student Union, said he's excited about the flashy, hip-hop music they'll be dancing to this year, instead of the usual Spanish theme.

"We never expect to win," he said. "It's more like just having fun, the experience to do this. You're in college. How many times do you have to do this?"

Sami Torres, another member of the LSU team, had similar thoughts about the competition.

"I think it's just building the relations with each other," she said. "I didn't know a lot of these people. This allows people to build a stronger relationship with one another."

Day said there are 463 students participating on the 21 teams, and they're vying for four trophies. Normally, the competition is broken down into three categories: greek, residence hall and independent, but this year there weren't any residence hall teams.

There are 11 teams from greek life and 10 that are independent. The awards they're competing for include the Greek Award, Independent Award, Crowd Favorite and Overall Favorite.

Day said the judges will be looking for adherence to the theme, originality and difficulty. Don't forget to lip sync, she said, and have clean dance moves.

Senior Caley Fitch from the Outlet dance team said she's ready to defend the group's two-year reign as champions.

"I'm looking forward to pleasing the crowd and getting them into it," she said. "It's Outlet family time, and it's just fun to be together and just collaborate."
