Offices and residence halls are ready to start Homecoming Week with red and white balloons, streamers, and windows painted to fit this year's Homecoming theme: "Rock the Red."
The Homecoming decoration competition was held Friday, as members of the steering committee walked from one location to another, looking at what students, faculty and staff put together for the week of events.
Departments and residence halls were judged based on creativity, artistic ability, degree of difficulty, Cardinal spirit and use of theme, Brittney Williams, faculty and staff chairwoman, said.
"We had some great entries this year," she said. "It was a really tough decision."
Eight Ball State department offices participated in this year's contest, Williams said, including the Center for Media Design, the Career Center and the Office of Student Life.
This was the first time the Center for Media Design decorated their office for Homecoming.
Staff at the Center for Media Design worked on the decorations Friday morning. Senior communication studies major Jennifer Watts said she and other staff members made a slide show that had to do with the theme, printed posters and set out different red foods.
"I think it's good that it gets everyone involved," Watts said. "We can show our school spirit and our support for the athletics department."
Some residence halls also showed their colors and support, including Studebaker West. The theme name and pictures of Charlie Cardinal dressed like the musicians of KISS could be seen on the windows from the outside of the building.
Sophomore dietetics major Sarah Noel said this was her first time participating in the competition, and although it took her and the rest of the decorating staff about six hours to complete the decorations, they were satisfied with their work.
"I met more people within the building," she said, "and it's nice because people are suddenly saying 'hi' to everybody. It's nice having connections now."
Williams said the competition allows departments around campus to show their support for the school.
"This is my first year, but it's exciting to see the departments as excited as the students," she said. "I think it's a good way to bring the faculty and students together for Homecoming."
The results of the decoration competition will be made Monday night during the Opening Ceremony.
