Just a day before the midterm elections, candidates are scrambling to reach the community one last time before voters head to the polls Tuesday.
Congressman Mike Pence will be at Ball State from 2 to 3 p.m. today outside the Art and Journalism Building with College Republicans to talk with students. College Republicans will have a tent outside from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and local candidates will be stopping by to meet with students.
Michael Thomas, College Republicans technology chairman, said Pence is stopping to thank supporters and students for helping out on his and the other candidates' campaigns. Pence also wants to spend time with students.
"It's been fantastic [getting to meet Pence]," Thomas said. "We've met with Dan Coats and pretty much all State Senate candidates. I think we have met about everyone in our ballot."
This isn't Pence first visit to Muncie during the campaign. Holly Gillham, College Republicans public relations chairwoman, said Pence met with College Republicans about a month ago.
Pence also visited the Delaware County Republican headquarters Thursday to rally for State Senate candidate Doug Eckerty.
"I've met him and he's just a really nice, genuine guy," Gillham said. "Getting to meet this man is a wonderful opportunity for students."
Local Republican candidates will be on campus throughout the day, including those running for prosecutor, county clerk, coroner and Center Township trustee.
"The old saying goes that the government closest to you affects you the most," Gillham said. "So we hope that students who are planning to vote in Delaware County come by and meet them before voting on Tuesday."
Students can stop by the tent to pick up brochures with information about local and state candidates and to grab some hot chocolate.
"We're ready to make 400 cups of cocoa for people that stop by," Thomas said. "We want to give as many people as possible the opportunity to talk with the candidates."
