Fall expo brings in high-profile tech companies

The East Central University and Ball State chapters of the Association of Information and Technology Professionals are holding the Fall Technology Expo and Region Five Conference today and Friday at the Horizon Convention Center downtown.

Representatives from companies such as Microsoft Corp., IBM and Xerox Corp. will give workshops on security and company development.

For recent and soon-to-be graduates as well as anyone looking for a job, a panel will be discussing what people should and should not put on their résumés.

Fred Kitchens, faculty adviser for the Ball State AITP, said interested students will have the opportunity to talk with representatives, allowing them to network.

"I think it gives them more insight for the career [students] are going to do after graduation," he said. "There will be information about the field and the direction of technology and management for those that are interested."

The Ball State chapter, which organized a large part of the event, will be given an award during the conference for being an outstanding student chapter. Ball State is one of eight university chapters in the country to receive the award, said Mitchell Miller, Ball State AITP chapter president.

"This is a big honor for our Ball State chapter," Miller said.

Currently 150 people are registered for the conference, Kitchens said.

Miller said Muncie will benefit from this conference because it brings about 200 people to Muncie. Many representatives and attendees will spend the night in local hotels and eat at local restaurants.

The purpose for the conference is to have regional meetings of all professional chapters of AITP, Miller said.

"This is our way of keeping the chapters connected and to see what each is doing," he said.

Today's session is from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday's is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
