The Men of Color organization at Ball State is hosting its first event of the semester. The event will cover domestic violence, a topic Men of Color President Christopher McBride said is often not well covered.
The event will be at 7 p.m. in Teachers College Room 102. It is open and free for the Ball State and Muncie communities.
The event, which last until 9 p.m., will feature poetry recitals by some students, a video compiled by The Mixx and a panel including representatives from the Muncie Police Department, Ball State's Victim Advocacy Center and A Better Way.
McBride said he came up with the idea for the event because of a person he knew who was going through the experience.
"I realized it was a serious issue, and that there is so much more to domestic violence," he said. "We have to be conscious of the issue."
After McBride told the organization, everyone involved was all for it. They set up tables Wednesday at the Atrium, passing out flyers and ribbons as a symbol for domestic violence awareness month.
A Better Way provides shelter and services for victims of domestic violence, transitional housing, and advocacy for victims of sexual assault in Muncie. It opened in 1978.
McBride said he hopes to see enough students to fill the room at Teachers College.
"We would like to make the whole campus aware of the issue," he said. "We want to pack up the Teachers College lecture room."
