Cyclist gets hit at Scramble Light

South Bend resident Charlie Hartman said he was riding his bicycle north when he got the green light at McKinley and Riverside avenues when a young female driver was making a left-hand turn east onto Riverside and struck the back of his bicycle around 2 p.m.

Freshman social work major Grace Sharritt said she was standing on the southwest corner waiting for the Scramble Light when she heard the two collide.

"I was just waiting when I heard it. I turned and just saw him wipe out afterward," she said. "I called the police. He just immediately got up and it was a relief. [The noise] was a lot louder than you would think."

Sophomore dietetics major Erika Money said she was waiting for the Scramble Light outside of Teacher's College when she heard the collision.

"I turned and saw him hit his head. He just wiped out," she said.

Hartman, who is in town visiting a friend, said the collision and fall broke his phone and damaged he front tire of his bike.

"I bit it and it hurt. It wasn't the worst [fall] I've had, though," he said.

Money said the driver of the vehicle stopped, got out to see if Hartman was alright and the passenger got in the drivers seat to take the car elsewhere so traffic could move through.

Sharritt said she believed the driver didn't have a license.

"I heard the police officer say he needed her permit and the license of the passenger," she said.
