Car wreck slows afternoon traffic

Traffic was slowed down for about half an hour Friday afternoon after two cars driving south collided on McKinley Avenue outside North Quad.

John Meteer, a graduate counseling psychology student, said he drove past the Scramble Light and stopped behind a row of cars when he saw freshman Paige Southerland driving fast.

"The cars were stopped in front of us," he said. "I'm not quite sure if someone was turning [onto Riverside] or if there was a bus holding up the line. So we came to a stop and I looked at my rear-view mirror. She was flying up behind me and hit my truck. Mine rolled forward and hit the car in front."

Walker Hinkle, junior elementary education major, was sitting next to Southerland in the passenger seat. He said he saw the cars in front of them stop abruptly and she hit her brakes, but not in time.

"It was like a chain reaction," he said. "He stopped real fast."

Junior elementary education major Cheyenne Ball said she was in class in North Quad when she heard the crash.

"We had the windows open and we heard this big bang," she said. "All we heard were some horns and this loud thud. Our professor let us out early."

After 30 minutes a tow truck arrived to take Southerland's car away from the scene. Officer David Huff said nobody was injured at the accident.
