Ball State's CICS holds conference at Indianapolis

Speakers from all over the country will be in Indianapolis at the Digital Policy in an Information Economy Conference this weekend.

For the three-day technology event, going on today through Saturday at the Sheraton City Centre, speakers will come from a variety of professional backgrounds including business, health care, visual communications and journalism.

Barry Umansky, conference co-chairman, said the event is full of opportunities for students.

"Our main goal is education, so people can be brought up to speed in a wealth of different areas," Umansky said. "I think everyone will gain from attending the conference."

Umansky said he encourages attorneys who want to be better versed in privacy laws to spend some time at the conference.

Events at the conference include presentations on the effect broadband has on health care, the workplace and intellectual property.

Center for Information and Communication Sciences graduate student Mike Linsey said there are a number of reasons why the conference is important.

"It's important because it's going to address a lot of issues with the national broadband plan," Linsey said. "It's also a great opportunity to network with professionals in technology and visual communication fields."

Linsey will present a policy paper on network neutrality and moving forward with the country's national broadband plan, which is a comprehensive plan to bring broadband Internet to different areas of public services.

The conference is presented by Ball State and The Digital Policy Institute, which was created in 2004 to focus on research and education on issues relating to digital media.
