Wuhnurth moves from Waterbowl

Ball State University students with plans to go to this year's Wuhnurth will have to drive a little bit farther than in previous years.

Wuhnurth, an annual event that started out in Muncie moved its location to Spencer, Ind., two and a half hours southeast of Ball State. The location was changed due to the increase of number of attendees and after a financial dispute between the Water Bowl and concert organizers for its sister event Springfest.

The Water Bowl, located three miles northeast of Ball State campus, used to be the venue for Wuhnurth and Springfest. The two events were started by Ball State alumnus, James Nimmer.

Jennifer Spector, public relations director for Wuhnurth, said after the numbers seen on Springfest and last year's Wuhnurth, the event organizers decided to change to a larger venue.

"We moved to Spencer because it was getting too big, according to our numbers for Springfest," she said. "Springfest was a huge success, so we thought we needed a bigger space, and it allows us to be more in contact with nature."

The new location will have on-site camping, a recording studio for music collaborations, main stage roofing, light shows, fire dancers, food and merchandise vendors, musician shops and more than 40 hours of live, original music.

This year's Wuhnurth is set for Sept. 17 through the 19 and will feature 35 to 40 bands playing from Friday at noon until Sunday at midnight.

Spector said the event will include morning meditations, fire dances and sessions for event-goers to learn about living more sustainable.

"We've been focusing on getting as much vibe as possible, and that's why we are having a wide variety of music," she said.

"Amazing music, the people, and the atmosphere," staff worker Kyle Smith said, "[it makes Wuhnurth] all worth the price, and it's super affordable."

Last year there were more than 3,000 fans and enthusiasts, but this year they're expecting more people to show up. The mission for this music festival is to increase environmental appreciation and encourage activism. A portion of the profits goes toward funding environmental resources throughout local communities. Wuhnurth celebrates and embraces the art of music and culture.
