Walk Indiana event comes to Cardinal Greenway

Muncie hosts Walk Indiana on the Cardinal Greenway today. This event is "aimed toward making Delaware County a healthier, happier community," according to the Walk Indiana website.

Saturday's event is the first annual, non-competitive marathon. There will be a full marathon, half marathon and quarter marathon for all ages.

Participation fee for the event is $25 per person, but if registered after August 1, the fee is increased to $35. This includes a sports bag, Walk Indiana T-shirt, medallion and refreshments throughout the course.

The full marathon starts at 8 a.m. at Wysor Depot and passes through the White River, Minnetrista, Cantilever Walkway and along with other trails. The finish line will be where the run starts, at Wysor Depot. This run is 26.2 miles long and will have eight rest stops.

With 13.1 miles, the half marathon walk starts at 11 a.m. This course will start in Wysor Depot and will travel along part of the Greenway's trail.

The final run/walk will be the quarter marathon which is 6.5 miles. The quarter begins at 12:30 p.m. and starts at Wysor Depot.

All of the trails will have volunteers stationed until 5 p.m. at rest stops. These rest stops provide fresh fruit and granola bars and refreshments.

Bring your cell phone in case of emergencies. The volunteers at the rest stops will have cell phones with lists of emergency contact numbers.

Volunteer work is available throughout the event. Volunteers will assist with check–in, rest-stops, and handing out drinks and food for runners and walkers.

Course set-up and tear down volunteers help with the mile markers, tables, and tents. There also volunteers for bike control that are used to pick up garbage and other items along the course and to check on the health of the runners and walkers.

There will be over 400 people participating, helping out, or watching the event today. Parking is planned to be at the Muncie Fieldhouse. MITS buses will give free shuttle from the Fieldhouse to Depot. The shuttles will run every 10 minutes between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
