Some Ball State students will spend part of their Saturday serving the community on the second annual National Day of Service.
Participants will divide into four groups and go to different locations around Muncie. Students will work with the Muncie Mission helping clean up the building under reconstruction, part of which was damaged by a fire on July 4. Other groups will work at Harvest Soup Kitchen, Muncie Children's Museum and the Boys and Girls Club.
Students will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the SVS office, where they will check in and receive instructions before leaving for the different locations. All four groups will check in at the SVS office at different times of the day.
Kathy Smith, associate director of Student Life, said although it was easier for students to sign up for the event on a Saturday, it was difficult to find nonprofit organizations that were open.
Last year there were five programs for students to choose from; this year there are only four. However, 34 students signed up this year, more than last year, Smith said.
After students check in, the SVS office will talk to them about why it is important for them to serve on the ninth anniversary of Sept. 11, Smith said.
According to the Corporation National and Community Service website, President Barack Obama signed the Serve America Act into law in April 2009, designating September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.
