Student Government Assocation held its freshmen nomination convention on Tuesday night where nine freshmen came out for six elected positions.
SGA President Matthew Whitlock was impressed with how smoothly the nomination convention ran even though less freshmen came out than originally expected.
"It went very well," Whitlock said. "The number that we orignially projected about 10 to 15 but we are very happy that we got nine."
Campaigning for these nine individuals opened a few hours after the nomination convention closed.
"We gave them a list of campaign rules and regulations that way they would each be informed," Whitlock said. "Then we gave them the parameters of the election, which we had given out at the information session.
Time was given to the elections board to check and re-check the students grades and eligiblity.
"The same voting system we use to elect executive slates will be what we use to elect these six freshmen," he said.
The elections will be open only to freshmen since these individuals will be representing the freshmen class within the organization.
"Only freshmen will be allowed to vote for freshmen senators which I think makes all the sense in the world," Whitlock said. "They were told last night to market themselves to the freshmen in their dorms and in the resident halls."
Online voting for these seats will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 20 and will close at 11:59 p.m. that evening. Freshmen will receive an e-mail with a link directing them to the voting website. This link will also be available on Monday on SGA's website at bsu.edu/sga.
Editor's note: This version of the story was corrected from its original version to reflect that voting will take place on Monday, not Tuesday.
