SGA passes bylaw revisions

Many Student Government Association senators went into this week's meeting with fingers crossed. Wednesday marked the second bylaw revision for the senate.

In the last bylaw revision session, SGA had a marathon senate that lasted almost three hours.

The bylaw of debate concerned the amount of time organizational and residence halls had to fill their caucus seats. It also dealt with attendance issues.

In the previous attempt at a revision, members of the organizational and on-campus caucuses felt as if their specific organizations were being punished by losing a seat if it had an irresponsible member who was not showing up for meetings.

"That issue has now been taken care of," SGA President Matthew Whitlock said. "What we are looking at doing is putting a two-week limit on organization and residence hall senators."

This two-week limit will allow these organizations and residence halls two school weeks, not including Finals Week, to find a new representative without the punishment of losing their senate seat.

"So if it happens the last week before finals week, it's not like they are done because people have left," Whitlock said.

For members of the on-campus and organizational caucuses, these revisions are a relief.

"More of the responsibility is on the senator. The constituents aren't taking the heat if their senator just isn't showing up," said Chris Buck, on-campus caucus whip.

Senators are pleased with the revisions and are glad that this bylaw revision meeting went off without a hitch, Mark Mosias, organizational caucus senator, said.

"Last semester, when they proposed these changes, they put all the responsibility of that one individual senator messing up on the organization," Mosias said. "We felt like if that senator was messing up, it should be on them. With these new bylaw revisions they do that exactly."

The next set of scheduled bylaw revisions will be in December.
