Peace week to kick off with live stream

Students have free access to the live stream of prominent author and two time Nobel Peace Prize nominee Greg Mortenson's speech on his "books not bombs" method of bringing peace to Central Asia.

The speech will stream live at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom at 6:30 p.m. this evening. A discussion led by people who have read Mortenson's book, "Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan," will follow the speech.

Mortenson will be speaking to a sold-out audience at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Indianapolis. The event kicks off Peace Week, which is from Sept. 27 to Oct. 2, culminating at Pedal for Peace on Oct. 2. Half of the proceeds raised at Pedal for Peace go to Central Asia Institute.

Mortenson is the co-founder and executive director of CAI and will receive the money raised by Pedal for Peace at his speech Monday.

CAI is a non-proft dedicated to promoting and supporting community-based education. The organization concentrates on bringing education to girls in remote regions of Central Asia. CAI recently received $100,000 of President Barack Obama's Nobel Peace Prize money.

Mortenson is also the founder of Pennies for Peace, a New York Times best selling author, a veteran and 2010 recipient of the American Peace Award.

A team captain for Pedal for Peace and graduate assistant at Ball State's Center for Peace and Conflict Studies, Emily Mastroianni, believes Mortenson's speech is going to concentrate on his work in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Other ways student can get involved in peace efforts is to attend a brown bag lunch on the topic of the the civil rights movement on Oct. 14 hosted by the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies.
