It has been nearly two days since the San Francisco 49ers released former Ball State quarterback Nate Davis. In the next 24 hours, we should find out whether he gets another chance with the NFL team that drafted him.
While Davis was released Monday afternoon, he was not officially placed on the waiver wire until Tuesday at 4 p.m. If he clears waivers and goes unclaimed by 4 p.m. today, the 49ers are expected to sign Davis to the practice squad.
On his weekly radio show, 49ers coach Mike Singletary said cutting Davis was a risk he believed he should take. He said he would like to have Davis come back.
"I really hope we're able to keep him here, because I think there's a lot here that can help him, and hopefully in the future he can be the quarterback we hoped he would be when we drafted him," Singletary said.
The overall concern for Davis was his offseason work ethic and preparation, which Singletary questioned during the preseason. Last Friday, Singletary said Davis was "working at it" and beginning to understand the amount of effort it takes to be prepared in the NFL.
As of Tuesday evening, no NFL teams have put a claim on Davis. Should he rejoin the 49ers, he will be joined by fellow quarterback Jarrett Brown on the practice squad.
The 49ers replaced Davis with Heisman Trophy winner and former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Troy Smith on Monday. Smith is expected to compete with former No. 1 overall draft pick David Carr San Francisco's backup position.
