Muncie Community Schools was recognized Tuesday in Indianapolis for being one of three schools in the state to make significant improvements in its ISTEP+ scores since it implemented the "8-Step Process."
MCS, along with New Castle Community Schools and the South Bend Community School Corporation, started using the process in November.
According to Indiana's Department of Education website, the integrated process focuses on increasing student achievement and closing the gap between student groups by concentrating on working with each child's individual strengths and limitations.
Christy Luellen, director of communications for MCS, said the test scores have gone up considerably.
The corporation saw a 4.7 percent increase in students passing English and language arts, a 7.8 percent increase of students passing math and a 7 percent increase of students passing both English, language arts and math.
MCS Superintendent Eric King said he is proud of the fact that the schools were recognized and believes that this recognition was deserved.
At the ceremony, King introduced the principals of the nine MCS elementary schools and the members of the "8-Step Process" team. Each teacher was able to share a success story and discuss challenges they face in the 2010-2011 school year.
King said he hopes the program will continue to show an "upward slant in terms of student improvement."
