Letterman, Stone to visit Ball State on Friday

Ball State alumnus David Letterman will return to campus Friday with Twitter cofounder Biz Stone to hold a conversation on social media with students.

The lecture is part of the David Letterman Distinguished Professional Lecture and Workshop Series and will be held at 7:30 p.m. in John R. Emens Auditorium.

Students had the opportunity to get free tickets for the lecture Saturday morning, and the deadline for the priority ticket distribution was extended to Wednesday evening.

Letterman, a 1969 Ball State graduate, last came to the university in 2007 for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the $21 million building bearing his name.

Letterman has been a continuous donor to Ball State, giving out $10,000, $5,000 and $3,333 scholarships to telecommunications students

During Friday's lecture, Stone will talk about the importance of social media sites.

Stone was recruited in 2003 by Google, where he met and collaborated with Evan Williams. After the pair left the search company, they founded Twitter in 2007.

Stone also helped create the blogging sites Xanga and Blogger and has published two books: "Blogging: Genius Strategies for Instant Web Content" and "Who Let the Blogs Out?"

The Letterman lecture series has brought experts in the area of emerging media to campus, including former ABC correspondant Ted Koppel, "The Art of Innovation" author Tom Kelley and MSNBC.com multimedia director Brian Storm.

Dale Herigstad, chief creative officer for Schematic, is the second confirmed speaker for the series this year. He'll speak about "The Future of Interactive Design" on Oct. 19.

Letterman and Stone's speech will be broadcast in Pruis Hall as well. Tickets are not required to attend that screening.
