International Student Volunteers representatives are on campus this week looking for Ball State students interested in overseas volunteer opportunities this summer.
ISV spokesman Ryan McAlpine spent time exploring Costa Rica in November 2008 and helping locals protect the eggs of leatherback sea turtles.
"It's a really great opportunity. I realized that there's a whole other world out there," McAlpine said. "It really helps you develop a global awareness."
Students who participate will have the opportunity to travel with a group of international students to Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Thailand or Africa, according to an ISV press release.
Most students will travel for one month, but they travel for as little as two weeks or as long as three months.
Students in the program will be improving the quality of impoverished villages, building houses for refugees, teaching children English or working on conservation projects.
As well as doing volunteer work, McAlpine said participants will be given time to explore the country they go to.
McAlpine said the average trip costs about $3,300 including lodging, food and travel in the country but not airfare. Students do not need to have language skills to participate in the program but can take language courses offered by ISV before leaving.
For more information about ISV opportunities, representatives will be holding informational meetings Thursday at the top of every hour from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Room 305.
