FOOTBALL: Ball State wins first game of the season

Able to overcome a first-half scare from Southeast Missouri State, Ball State won its season opener Thursday night 27-10.

The Cardinals scored 20 points in the second half after a disappointing first half. Running back Cory Sykes rushed for a touchdown on Ball State's first possession of the game, but its offense stalled the rest of the half.

A 17-point third quarter put the Cardinals firmly in the driver's seat. After the teams traded field goals in the fourth quarter, Ball State had its first victory of the season. Last year, the Cardinals didn't secure their first win until week eight.

Thursday night, it was Ball State's running backs that led the way. Eric Williams ran for 105 yards and a touchdown. Sykes added 70 yards and two touchdowns. As a team, the Cardinals ran the ball 55 times for 243 yards.

Quarterback Kelly Page completed 10 of his 17 passes for 85 yards and an interception. He played almost all of the game, but freshman Keith Wenning directed the game's final drive.
